Ningal

Ningal
   A Sumerian goddess best known as the wife of the moon god, Nanna (or Sin), and mother of the sun god, Shamash. Nin-gal was also the deity of dream interpretation and a protector of the city of Ur, where her and Nanna's chief temple was located. Their other major cult center was at Harran in western Mesopotamia. A Su-merian myth, which has survived in the form of a lament (or lamentation), tells how Ningal tried but failed to persuade the gods An and Enlil not to destroy Ur:
   Truly, I myself mourned in front of [An and] Enlil: "May my city not be destroyed!" I said indeed to them. "May Ur not be destroyed!" I said indeed to them. "And may its people not be killed!" ... But An never bent towards those words, and Enlil never with an "It is pleasing, so be it!" did soothe my heart. Behold, they gave instructions that . . . Ur be destroyed, and as its destiny decreed that its inhabitants be killed. . . . The people mourn.
